When Pop left his family he put them on welfare during the depression. That means they good food. When Pop steals the dish he gets Woody kicked out of school, where Woody was only doing mediocre and didn't believe in anything that he was studying. Pop thinks that this isn't where his son belongs and he'll be happier doing something else.
